How Flatrock Got Its Start

Updated: 6 days ago

Back in the olden days, as my kids would say, so 2000, I attended high school in Dacula, Georgia. There wasn’t much to do around the area at the time other than get in trouble. That’s probably still the case, but back then one of our favorite things to do was off-road. Flatrock, exactly what it sounds like, a flat rocky spot down by a river only accessible via off-roading trail, was the place to be.

I didn’t have my own vehicle because I was a little punk who got in trouble and couldn’t get my license for a year, but other teens would bring their jacked-up trucks, hit the trails, get stuck in the mud, and just have fun. I loved tagging along. No schedules, no pressure, just carefree adventure. Those days are gone, but that same feeling of freedom is what I still love about trail running.

Several years later, Harbins Park was built on the land where Flatrock used to be, and the off-road trails were shut down. By then, I had become a trail runner and found my fun elsewhere, but I still wanted to bring that energy back to the area. That is how the Flatrock race started. My goal was simple: create an annual hangout where everyone is welcome, a place to forget everything else for a bit, kick back, and have fun.

The race is beginner-friendly, laid-back, and chill because I want anyone who wants to try it to feel confident they can. I’ve lived in this area my whole life, so I’ve never really met a stranger. I love our community and want to keep growing it.

Bring your family, bring your friends, and definitely bring chairs so we can sit, hang out, and enjoy the day after the race. It’s all about fun, connection, and a little adventure, just like those good old days we all like to remember.
