Georgia is home to some of the most rugged, rewarding, and downright beautiful trails in the Southeast. Over the years, I’ve explored countless routes, but a handful stand out as my absolute favorites. Each of these adventures offers something unique - whether it’s a massive payout view, a quiet escape, or a summer waterfall swim spot.
Here are my top 5 trail adventures in Georgia that I think every trail runner, hiker, or outdoor lover should add to their list.

1. Rabun Bald via Beegum Gap
Distance: ~8 miles (out and back)
Elevation Gain: ~2,000 feet
Start: Beegum Gap Trailhead (Sky Valley, GA)
AllTrails Link: Rabun Bald via Beegum Gap
Rabun Bald is Georgia’s second-highest peak, but don’t let that intimidate you—this trail is very approachable. You’ll pass through tunnels of rhododendron that feel like something out of a fairytale before popping out at the summit. At the top, climb the old fire tower for panoramic 360° views across North Georgia and into North Carolina.
Before & After: Grab a coffee beforehand at White Birch Provisions. On the way back, you can also swing by Black Rock Mountain State Park for another quick overlook, and stop in Outdoor76 to gear up for your next adventure.

2. Pinnacle Knob from Warwoman Dell
Distance: ~9 miles (out and back)
Elevation Gain: ~2,500 feet
Start: Warwoman Dell Recreation Area (Clayton, GA)
AllTrails Link: Pinnacle Knob via Bartram Trail
This is a quiet, lesser-known gem. The route starts with mossy forests and climbs steadily through diverse ecosystems. Along the way you’ll pass several waterfalls before reaching Pinnacle Knob—a rocky summit with jaw-dropping views over the Chattooga River and surrounding mountains. It’s a tougher climb, but usually very peaceful since it doesn’t get as much foot traffic.
Before & After:Bring a picnic for the grassy areas at Warwoman Dell, or head back into Clayton for a post-run meal at Universal Joint.

3. Brasstown Bald via Arkaquah Trail
Distance: ~12 miles (out and back)
Elevation Gain: ~4,200 feet
Start: Track Rock Gap Trailhead (Blairsville, GA)
AllTrails Link: Arkaquah Trail to Brasstown Bald
This one is not for the faint of heart. The Arkaquah Trail is one of the steepest, toughest climbs in Georgia—especially the first mile, which gains over 1,000 feet right out of the gate. Expect rocky, rooty terrain and even a washed-out section where ropes are often needed to scramble across. The reward? Standing on Brasstown Bald, Georgia’s highest peak, with sweeping views that make every brutal step worth it.
Before & After:Parking is limited at Track Rock Gap, so plan ahead. Afterward, cool down with a dip in Lake Nottely or grab BBQ in Blairsville at Jim’s Smokin’ Que.
4. Blue Hole Falls & High Shoals Falls

Distance: ~2.5 miles (out and back)
Elevation Gain: ~400 feet (all on the way back)
Start: High Shoals Falls Trailhead (Hiawassee, GA)
AllTrails Link: High Shoals Falls Trail
If you’re looking for a short, family-friendly adventure, this is it. The trail drops down to two stunning waterfalls—Blue Hole Falls and High Shoals Falls—giving you two rewards for the price of one. The way out is easy (all downhill), but remember that means the return trip is all uphill. In the summer, this trail is especially fun because you can cool off in the refreshing pools.
Before & After:Stop by Chatuge Lake for a swim or paddle, or reward yourself with the best nachos ever from Marina Station

5. Cowrock Mountain via Appalachian Trail
Distance: ~2 miles (out and back)
Elevation Gain: ~800 feet
Start: Tesnatee Gap Trailhead (Cleveland, GA)
AllTrails Link: Cowrock Mountain via AT
For a quick but spectacular adventure, Cowrock is hard to beat. Starting from Tesnatee Gap, you’ll climb steadily along the Appalachian Trail before breaking out to wide-open views from the summit. It’s the perfect sunrise or sunset hike—short enough to squeeze in on a busy day, but with views that rival much longer treks.
Before & After:Head into Helen for a post-run bratwurst or beer at Bodensee, or stop in Cleveland for coffee at Yonah Coffee Company.
Final Thoughts
Whether you’re chasing waterfalls, grinding up to Georgia’s highest summit, or squeezing in a quick Appalachian Trail run, these five adventures showcase the best of what North Georgia has to offer. They’re the trails that keep me lacing up again and again, and I promise they’ll win you over too.
